Every Monday this season, Hoffer’s High School Sports/cPort Credit Union will select an Athlete of the Week.
The winner will receive a drawstring bag with the HHSS/cPort logo.
This week’s selection is…
Windham senior boys’ basketball captain and standout Tyrie James.
James went off for 41 points last Tuesday in an 83-75 loss at Bonny Eagle. Friday, after being held scoreless for the game’s first two-and-a-half quarters, James scored a game-high 24 points and had eight assists and eight rebounds as the Eagles rallied for a 79-76 overtime victory at Cheverus.
“I love it coming in and quieting the crowd,” James said. “We believe we can win, no matter what. Every single game is exciting. We have limited time left to play together and we’re making the most of it. Regardless of the outcome of the game, it’s just amazing to be here.”
“Tyrie’s an observer,” said Windham coach Chad Pulkkinen. “He’ll observe to see what’s available. He does a great job being patient. He gets everyone’s best defender, but he’s so hard to stop. He finds a way to win. He’s a leader and a winner. (Big) moments don’t faze him. Tyrie is the best decision-maker I’ve ever coached and that makes him a great basketball player.”
Windham begins the final week of the regular season 14-2 and first in the Class A South Heal Points standings. The Eagles go to Deering Tuesday, then close at Thornton Academy Thursday before embarking on their quest to win a third consecutive state championship.
