AJ Moody and Tyrie James invited to 2025 Summer Slam, among the top 20 players in the state

PORTLAND, ME – [August 1, 2025] – Together Reaching Unity (TRU), a non-profit dedicated to empowering youth through sports, is proud to announce the 15th annual Summer Slam, set to take place on Tuesday, August 5th, at the Eastern Promenade in Portland. This milestone event will once again bring together Maine’s most promising young basketball players for a day of high-level competition, community spirit, and celebration.

Founded by Portland native and former professional basketball star Nik Caner-Medley, Summer Slam has grown from a heartfelt initiative to give back to his community into a premier statewide event. While it now features top talent from across Maine, the heart of Summer Slam has always remained firmly rooted in supporting and inspiring the youth of Portland.

“Summer Slam is more than just a basketball tournament; it’s a testament to the power of community and the positive impact sports can have on young lives,” says Nik Caner-Medley. “For 15 years, our goal has been to provide a platform for these incredible young athletes to showcase their skills, learn valuable life lessons, and connect with their peers, all while fostering a sense of unity and belonging right here in Portland.”

This year’s event promises an exciting lineup of games, highlighting both emerging and established talent:

  •  2:00 PM: Girls Rising Stars Game (featuring the state’s top 8th and 9th graders)
  •  3:00 PM: Boys Rising Stars Game (featuring the state’s top 8th and 9th graders)
  •  4:00 PM: Girls All-Star Game (featuring the state’s top high school players)
  •  5:00 PM: Boys All-Star Game (featuring the state’s top high school players)

The intent behind Summer Slam has always been clear: to use basketball as a vehicle for positive change. TRU’s mission is to create a safe and inclusive environment where young people can engage in fun, healthy activities, learn about teamwork, discipline, and perseverance, and ultimately maximize their full potential. The event provides free youth sports programming, upholding the belief that every child should have the opportunity to play and grow through sports, regardless of their economic background.

The 15th Annual Summer Slam is free and open to the public to attend. Adding to the festive atmosphere, Hot Radio Maine will be on-site providing the music throughout the day.

Join TRU, Nik Caner-Medley, and the entire Portland community on August 5th to witness the future of Maine basketball and celebrate 15 years of community impact at Summer Slam.
