Athletes of the Week: Feb. 9, 2018
Molly Murnane of Scarborough and Nick Curtis of Windham earn this week’s honors.
Nick Curtis, Windham basketball: The 5-10 senior guard became the second player in Windham boys’ basketball history to reach 1,000 career points. Needing 28 points, he scored 29 on Saturday against Lewiston while dishing out seven assists. Last Thursday, Curtis scored 21 points with five rebounds in a key 55-50 win against Scarborough. He scored 15 points Monday in a 59-45 win at Gorham as the Eagles improved to 12-5.
Molly Murnane, Scarborough indoor track: The junior sprinter ran the fastest time in the state this season for 55 meters, winning in 7.38 seconds at a Feb. 3 meet at Phillips Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire. Murnane also ran the second-fastest time in Maine this season in the 200, winning in 26.22, just .01 off the state-leading time.
HONORABLE MENTION
Annesley Black, Cheverus Alpine skiing: A junior, Black turned in the two fastest times of the day to win an SMAA slalom race at Shawnee Peak. Black’s combined time of 1 minute, 47.19 seconds was faster by 14 seconds than anyone else in the field of 45.
Meghan Graff, South Portland basketball: The senior guard had two outstanding games in helping the Red Riots improve to 16-1 with two victories. She scored 13 points with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in a 54-44 win over Gorham, then added 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists in a 71-35 win over Portland.
Alex Goodman, Freeport basketball: The senior guard/forward helped the 14-3 Falcons to two big wins. She scored 22 points in a 59-47 win over Lake Region, then had 24 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals in a 60-41 win over Wells.
BOYS

HONORABLE MENTION
Noah Lang, Camden Hills wrestling: The junior pinned his way to the 145-pound KVAC championship, winning three matches in less than six minutes, including stopping Cole Dunham of Oxford Hills at 1:03 in the final. The KVAC tournament included all of the top teams in Class A North. Lang (36-1 with 20 pins this season) will try to win a third straight regional title Saturday at Oxford Hills.
Griffin Conley, Falmouth diving: A senior, Conley raised his school record for six dives by scoring 260.30 points to win a meet at Cape Elizabeth. It’s the top diving score in the state this winter, regardless of class.
Sean Maguire, Marshwood Alpine skiing: Maguire put down the two fastest runs to win an SMAA slalom event Friday at Shawnee Peak. Maguire’s combined time of 1 minute, 40.13 seconds was faster by more than five seconds than anyone else in the field of 52 competitors.
